Welcome to Dave Need and Phil Gendall's blog. This is a record of our 2008/9 journey from Cornwall to Timbuktu in a 15 year-old totally unmodified Pugeot 205, as part of the Plymouth-Timbuktu Challenge (http://www.plymouth-banjul.co.uk/). Phil is a director at Gendall Design (www.gendall.co.uk), and Dave is a carpenter and boat builder. We left on boxing day 2008 from Portsmouth - and traveled to Marrakesh for New Year's Eve - then on down through Western Sahara and Mauritania, turning left somewhere and on to Mali.... and thence to Timbuktu. The car in front is...
...Andy and Ieuan (not a made up name but maybe a welsh one)... Driving a very nicely turned out, pristine White Fiat Panda Selecta, 1993, K plate. Apparently Fiat stands for Fix It Again Tomorrow. It's after midnight and hopefully we are stopping in Le Mans or Tours. So far, so good...

Every journey starts with a single...
So, after months of planning and worrying and packing we are on the road. The highway of dreams lools suspiciously like the M5, we are both pretty sleep-deprived but we are off. The car is packed to the rafters... And as dave says - if we've forgotten it, we didn't need it anyway. It's Boxing day, it's very early, and we are bound for Portsmouth for the 2.30 ferry. It's the only deadline for the next month.
